Talking, walking, good food and a range of activities to choose from — all combine to enable unattached people to enjoy country walking at it’s best.  Making new friends in beautiful scenery, where there is no pressure, and where you can get away from the everyday life treadmill, is what this break is designed to do.  We offer two days of walking, with two nights in the Longmynd Hotel, Church Stretton for the Shropshire Hills, The Best Western Valley Hotel for the Ironbridge Gorge and Charles Cotton Hotel in Hartington, Derbyshire.  We meet on Friday evenings, at 7.00 pm, for a three course dinner and a discussion on what we are doing during the weekend.  We always run an optional Friday afternoons walk if you can make the venue by 2.00pm.

During each weekend, and if there is sufficient numbers on the break,  we will run two walks - one is moderate and will take in the lovely hill country, and will certainly climb and descend a couple of our lovely hills over 9 miles.  The second will cover about 5 to 6 miles, and will not climb as high, though there will be some ascending and descending.  The pace will be a bit slower. Where we can, we will meet up for lunch, and all dinners and social activities will be done together as a group.  You will need walking gear for both walks, and, yes, it will rain occasionally so waterproof clothing is advisable.

Each weekend’s walking has a different theme, to fit into the time of year, or events going on in the area.

Accommodation is single en suite rooms — no sharing.  No singles supplement.  All hotels have a bar, and lounge.  We have lunch at a lovely country pub, or cafe on the way, and dinners are three course at the hotel.  Dress code is smart casual.

Walking starts at 9.30 am, and we generally finish for that welcome cuppa at 4.30 pm. This will give you plenty of time to get ready for dinner. Your walk leaders will make this weekend break relaxing and the wonderful walking will stimulate your enthusiasm for the wide outdoors.

Walking — Grades and difficulty
We walk between 8 and 9 miles per day.  We walk at a steady pace, we don’t rush.  We want you to enjoy our lovely scenery — these hills are a walkers paradise with good paths and an ever changing landscape.  There are hills to ascend — we go up to a maximum of 500 metres over two miles of walking, but the climbing is gradual and we won’t rush.  What’s the point of huffing and puffing, being exhausted then not being able to enjoy this fabulous land.  Descending is not precarious, and is gentle in relationship to many walking areas.

Shropshire is a land of ever changing vistas — on any walk we get four or five different landscapes to enjoy.  The views over 360 degrees are unrivalled — we see into Mid Wales to Cader Idris, the Berwyns, Malverns, Clee’s and Staffordshire peaks, as well as Shropshire's own individual hills.  The Derbyshire Dales, with tinkling streams and lovely moors is a true delight, and Ironbridge Gorge, with its history and and evocative past has many good walks.

Walking boots or shoes are obligatory, and many walkers find a walking pole useful, especially on the downhills.  You will also need wet weather gear — generally we have a mild climate, lovely springs and autumns, and winter walking too is outstanding in theses secret hills.

Just arrive and enjoy.

Food — all part of relaxing in these hills

All our hotels excel in giving you value for money and very tasty evening meals — they pride themselves on their food, much locally sourced and grown.  At our lunch stops, we will make sure you have value for money and tasty baguettes, baked potatoes, sandwiches or salads, with tasty soups in the colder months.  We cater for vegetarians and other dietary requirements.
