What a super guided walking holiday in Borrowdale

What a fabulous week in Borrowdale!

Super weather -lovely people – great hotel – what more could you want – our adventure in the Northern Lakes and Borrowdal

The initial afternoon walk we headed up towards Glaramara to get our first views of the Borrowdale Valley.

Catbells is one of the most popular Wainwright walks.  We all headed along the valley on day two towards this ‘famous’ destination.  There are two routes to be taken along Catbells, one on the top ridge and the other half way up.  Both give splendid views of Derwent Water and we offered both to our group.

Watenlath is always a popular route.  This quiet, hidden valley with its pretty tarn nestling in the bottom.  Surprise View with its famous vista across Derwent to Catbells where we’d been the day before.  Ashness Bridge.  Chocolate box and calendars.

Hills and wildness are part of what the Lake District has to offer.  Our higher route was a gradual ascent up Grains Gill, passing waterfalls and deep pools, to the pretty Sprinkling Tarn.  The return route via Styhead tarn and valley.  Giving a feeling of wild open spaces and magnificent views of Scafell Pike.

Optional lower route.  Scenic Keswick to Threckeld Railway.  Winding lanes and paths to the ancient stone circle.  Dropping down through woodlands to the Lake shore for a paddle and a meander through the park back to Keswick where we caught the open top bus back to our hotel.

Last day.  Castle Crag.  We’d been watching it all week. River walk there. Sat in the middle of the valley and another Wainwright for any baggers.  Open cast slate mine at the top and a meandering return across the fell side.  Dropping down to our hotel down Hause Gill with its pretty river and falls.

But the real bonus – yes walking fabulous -but we had super weather. Not a drop of rain for five days- now you cannot say that often in the Northern Lakes.

8 lovely clients enjoyed the hospitality of Glaramara hotel – lovely food and comfy rooms.

But you can join us in this heavenly place – on 17 July, September 18 and October 28 – see for more information.

Here’s what our clients thought.

A much-loved independent company who seem to have it just right. Beautiful areas to explore, with such friendly, knowledgeable, competent (and patient) guides. All ran like clockwork but with flexibility thrown in. So well organised too with regard to the hotels’ location and the organisation of each day’s walk which manages to allow for ample and delicious food consumption too! What more could we want? The guided walking experience was perfect as we had extremely friendly and knowledgeable guides who made each walk an absolute delight.
The Glaramara hotel was superb; excellent food and very good staff. Very comfortable room with beautiful view.

10/10! Alvina and Bridget (walk guides) were experienced, responsive and good company. The variety of walking was excellent and the option for more or less challenging routes worked well for the group. Thankyou.

Very much enjoyed guided walking. Excellent adaptable walk planning by Alvina and Bridget. I trusted their judgment and they are both super company. Happily, we were blessed with no rain and beautiful walking weather for the whole trip. Excellent hotel. The Glaramara is a beautifully located and well run hotel. The evening meals are a highlight.
