Gran Canaria is a beautiful natural environment, nearly half of which is protected, but only by walking can you discover the true delights of the island and its people.
Much of our walking is in the Cumbre, the central mountain range with dramatic landscapes and remote cave villages, as well as in the fertile north, where we venture into deep valleys with lush vegetation. We can discover pine forests, alpine meadows, sub-tropical valleys, mountain peaks and gorges around the Cruz de Tejeda . In spring the flowers are a delight and much of the flora here is only found on the island due to the unique climate.
A superbly located hotel and good food support the walking programme.
Using local guides, supported by our UK tour leader, this walking programme brings you the best of walking in the sunshine of a Gran Canaria spring - a real winter sunshine destination- away for the UK dark and dismal winter - just join us and experience!

Wednesday normally is your free day
Our guided walks will range from between 4 to 6 hours and will be led by Canarian guides and supported by Secret Hills walk leader. Our holiday is aimed at experienced walkers. The walks we offer are on well defined 'mountainous' paths and tracks which take us over volcanic rocks and through pine forests. The walks sometimes consist of sections of short/ steep ascents and descents but on good trails with no exposed sections.
All our walks will reward you with wonderful panoramas out to the coast and on most days you will see Mt.Teide on Teneriffe as it towers through.
We will offer you both circular walks and linear walks to give you the best walking routes
Here are some of the walks we will offer you:
1.This walking route departs from Cruz de Tejeda and goes along the border of Tejeda’s Cauldron. The views over the mountains, valleys and natural monuments of the west side of the Island are impressive during the whole of todays walk If the weather conditions are appropriate you will have wonderful views over mount Teide (Tenerife) and will enjoy the sea of clouds that covers this area from time to time..
Little by little, the Roque Nublo will look smaller and the new protagonist for the route will be Roque Bentaiga and the Acusa valleys.
A brief stop at the Cuevas Caballero, an important settlement for the Canariis (old inhabitants of Gran Canaria), will help you to understand the way this community used to live. At the Cuevas Caballeros you will also be able to see some signs carved by the Canariis on the walls of the caves.
Our walk will pass through Artenara, the highest Village of Gran Canaria, where you will visit the sanctuary of “Virgen de la Cuevita” (Madonna’s Cave) and then we will continue on good paths and trails to Acusa valley where our transport will be waiting.
2.The Roque Nublo is considered one of the most symbolic places in Gran Canaria.
It is an important geographic point of the Island and a place that you must visit to discover and enjoy its grandiose landscape. This route becomes one of the most interesting ones when hiking in Gran Canaria.
The Roque Nublo Walking Route runs through some of the most impressive landscapes of the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve. You will enjoy, the whole way, spectacular views over the valleys and mountains of the west & south side of the Island.
This unique scenery that you can see from this route was named “The Petrified Storm” in reference to its violent and spectacular shapes. Miguel de Unamuno, a famous spanish philosopher, wrote: “a tremendous upheaval of the entrails of the earth; it all seems like a petrified storm, but a storm of fire, of lava, rather than of water“.
3. A splendid circular walk which takes us to and from our hotel. Morro de la Cruz Grande is a rugged, forested mountain lying west of San Bartolome with good tracks and paths that encircle it. Todays walk is very scenic, despite the forest and takes us into remote areas. Old mule paths are used at the start and finish, with gentle forest tracks in the middle.
We begin by ascending a stone paved path which zigzags and climbs on a rocky, pine forested slope which brings us to a rock cutting at Cruz Grande with spectatular views out to the Coast, and above to the crater rim.
We then traverse and undulate round the flanks of Morro de la Cruz Grande through pine forests then descend on a good, stony path direct to the hotel with wonderful views out to the coast.
4.A linear walk taking you right through the heart of Gran Canaria.
We begin by taking our transport to the start of our walk at Cruz de Tejeda. We then follow the main GR131 trail from Cruz de Tejeda back to our hotel at San Bartolome. The walk stays high on a mountain crest good trail with the most magnificent views around the Island. You will have the opportunity today to ascend a good trail to one of the best viewpoints we have found on the Island where we will have lunch before rejoining the trail and descending to Cruz de Grande and then winding down to our hotel. Todays walk is on good high level paths with occasional tracks and roads and on forested slopes.

Our administration services.
Great care has been taken selecting our routes to ensure our guests enjoyment and safety.
However, due to the challenging nature of the mountainous terrain there will be some steep climbs and descents so a good level of walking fitness is strongly recommended, this will greatly enhance the enjoyment of this walking holiday (a suggested kit list will be issued)
Overall we rate the walking as moderate with some challenging steep ascents and descents..
Gran Canaria is hilly/ even mountainous but we don’t tend to climb to the very summits – basically they are for rock climbers- our average daily ascent is 350-400 metres, then undulating – maybe a further 200 metres of ascents and descents – before final descent of 350-400 metres. But some quite steep sections, though not prolonged.
On good paths, the ground is hard, dusty and very dry, we stop often – taking on water is obligatory, and not every day will be the same – we may take transport higher up, and walk quite a bit of the walk on a reasonably level terrain, then descend.
