We always love travelling to the destinations in Europe and the varied scenery always entrances us.

But closer to home- what a fabulous opportunity to walk in quiet and spectacular scenery.

Secret Hills Walking Holidays – based in Church Stretton – is close to the Welsh border- and as early as the second year of our formation, we started to market holidays in Wales- why – stunning walking in silent places.

Wales is a big country when you try to pinpoint where to walk.

So here goes – this is where we walk.

Starting from the North – Llangollen and the Dee Valley- part of it is a World Heritage site with the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct the highlight. Llangollen is our base- a tourist town with plenty of shops and the river Dee tumbling down through its centre.

The Dee valley itself is a delight, and the North Berwyn mountains stretch for miles with excellent walking. Well worth a visit.

Further south – just – the county town of Montgomery awaits you well not a country now as it was swallowed up by Powys, but a peaceful idyll, nesting amongst rolling hills. Offa’s Dyke is close by- and this national trail ascends the hills above the town to afford us great walking.

The Radnorshire Hills and Elan Valley are further south. The Elan reservoirs do have high moors that mean open skies and good trekking. The Radnorshire Hills – with Great Rhos as their summit also provide wide open, quiet walking.

The area bounded by the Sugar Loaf Mountain above Abergavenny, and the lovely walking from Crickhowell with the Beacons Way at its heart are indeed a delight. The river Usk bisects this area so there are also some lovely river and canal walks – the Brecon Canal is nearby. Nearby- the South Wales Black Mountains- maybe a better walking area than many provide stunning treks.

Of course, the Brecon Beacons are indeed one of Wales’s finest scenic assets. The walking leaves you with a desire to come back- not only to the Pen Y Fan area but also the waterfall country west of the big mountains. The combination of both provides the discerning walker with boundless opportunities to explore – and it is still a quiet land.

Last on our exploration of Wales in the fabulous Gower peninsula.

It shouldn’t be last- its magical place- airy hills and magnificent coastal walking, with beaches to die for. Add the Swansea Bay area around Mumbles and you have a prefect holiday spot. Our clients love this land – mainly because it comes as surprise- a beauty that they did not expect.

Now before anyone thinks I have missed out areas that are popular and that have magnificent scenery- apologies – I know Snowdonia is fabulous, the Pembrokeshire coast is stunning. We just haven’t got there yet.
