The Parador de El Hierro is a paradise situated between a volcanic mountain and the blue ocean. The island is bathed by transparent waters and you will feel as if you are in a place only possible in your dreams. Because of the hotel’s magnificent location, drops of seawater will sprinkle your strolls through the garden and the intense blue of the water will slip in through your window. The building’s balconies put you so close to the ocean, you can almost touch it with your hand. From the garden, swimming pool and comfortable guest rooms, you will enjoy the gentle murmur of the waves. You will relax and rest, feeling at peace in this idyllic spot.

Grades and Difficulty
It’s all about meeting new friends. Each holiday is designed to be a friendly, relaxed and stress-free occasion. Talking is as important as walking on Secret Hills Walking Holidays. We don’t go in for discos, we may use an event that is taking place in the area we are in to boost the weekend’s activities – but it’s good, old fashioned chat that makes our short breaks successful.
“Make new friends that turn into old friends” – that’s our motto.
You might be surprised by what fun you’ll have with people who are older or younger than you during a holiday with us, and that’s exactly the sort of atmosphere we encourage; people find it very rewarding. It doesn’t matter what your reasons for travelling with us are, we’ve had people who are single, divorced or widowed, people who have partners that are unable to travel, and people who can’t holiday with their friends anymore as they’ve all got married themselves. There are people who want to make friends, see sights, and experience something completely new. Whatever your reason, we’ll welcome you with open arms and our friendly hosts will help you to get the most out of your holiday.
Don’t worry if this is the first time you have ventured to join a group holiday – its always a bit daunting – but we will look after you and ensure that you get used to being amongst friends again. Trust us to to get you back into the swing of things.
Oh – by the way – it’s not a dating agency – over the years we have had people meet and fall in love – but that’s just chance. Our aim is that you make like-minded friends – just relax and enjoy.
Just arrive and enjoy.
There are other walking holiday companies that cover Europe but we believe we offer the best value for many reasons….
You may book online.
Payment is in two parts – you pay a deposit of 25%, payable when reserving your holiday place. You will receive an invoice for the holiday showing the deposit paid, and full amount to pay for the holiday. This acts as your confirmation.
The balance is due 8 weeks prior to the holiday start date. You will be sent a reminder.
About three weeks prior to departure, we will send you holiday joining details, and details of the transfer from the airport to the appointed hotel we have arranged for you.
Once you arrive at your holiday destination
Secret Hills Walking Holidays organise all aspects of your holiday– including guiding, transport to walks start and provide you with an experienced tour guide. You make your own arrangements to get to the airport in the UK, we meet you at the airport you are flying to, and help you with your transfer to the appointed hotel.
It is important to read Secret Hills Walking Holidays Terms and Conditions – click on the tab on our web site – before you complete the booking form.
Insurance – you need to be fully covered
It is a condition of joining any of our holidays that you must be fully insured against travel, medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs and air ambulance or helicopter rescue services where appropriate).
We will ask you to provide us with the details of your insurance prior to the holidays start date and it is a condition of reserving a place.
If you are a UK citizen and travelling in Europe you should obtain the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) which is available only online from the UK Government website. This gives you medical care at a reduced cost, and some cases for free, in many European countries, but should not be considered a substitute for adequate travel insurance.
Volcanoes, lava flows, lush forests of Canary Island pine trees and laurisilva, trees that bow down to the wind, abrupt cliffs, relaxing natural pools, dizzying views… that’s El Hierro – enigmatic, awe-inspiring, a shelter where you can disconnect from busy modern life and enjoy a stress free holiday.
Different scenery at every step
The smallness of the island does not prevent you from finding a surprising variety of scenery on it. Best of all is that, as the distances are so short, we can have a relaxing swim at the coast one minute and be walking along a trail among Canary Island pines or laurisilva species a short while later. One of the most famous trails is the Camino de Jinama, an old route that used to be used by the island’s inhabitants, just over 3 kilometres long and with lots of ups and downs, but the reward at the end of it is incredible.
On the way to the highest areas of the island, we can stop at any of the vantage points to contemplate dizzying views such as the majestic Valle de El Golfo, formed after a mega-landslide thousands of years ago, and abrupt cliffs that the sea crashes up against.
There is no lack of striking volcanic landscapes on El Hierro either, such as the surroundings of the Faro de Orchilla, the lighthouse at the place considered the end of the world in ancient times and where the Zero Meridian was established until it was moved to Greenwich in 1884. If we didn’t know that America is on the other side of the ocean, it would really seem like we were at the edge of the planet. Sober, awe-inspiring scenery where we make out volcanoes, extensive flows where the lava contorts, the absolute silence… thrilling!
Also, on the Valle de El Golfo coast and sheltered from the marine currents are the La Maceta natural pools with sunbathing and picnic areas, especially perfect for enjoying with the family. Another must-visit for anyone who doesn’t want to miss a drop of sun or a relaxing swim is Tamaduste, a fabulous place on the El Hierro coastline known for its calm waters, the beauty of its surroundings and the peace found in this little village, where you can also try the island gastronomy at any of its restaurants.
Enjoy the island’s gastronomy and wines
Fresh fish is the star of El Hierro cuisine. It is a real pleasure to have some with typical wrinkly potatoes and ‘mojo’ sauce and, of course, some delicious island cheese made using traditional methods. This product from the El Hierro gastronomy goes with most dishes and is even the basis for making delicious cakes such as the famous ‘quesadillas’. When you try them, you are sure to keep a space in your suitcase to take some home with you and continue enjoying this delicacy for your taste buds.
Of course, we also have to try the tropical fruit grown on this volcanic land. Pineapples, of unbeatable quality, are a good example that always surprise people.
