You matter to us & we promise to provide you with a superb walking & social holiday, tailored specifically to your needs. We provide walking holidays for walkers & as walkers ourselves, we appreciate & understand the requirements of a walking holiday.
The Lake District is England’s only true mountain area. It has the most beautiful scenery in the land, with its bewitching mix of rugged mountains, deep gylls, shimmering lakes, bouncing waterfalls and attractive stone-built villages. Our solos guided walking holiday introduces you to this spectacular countryside.
We provide guided walking holidays for solos and singles – this is our unique speciality. We run breaks in some of the most magnificent landscapes in Europe and the UK. We have an extra speciality in that we also design bespoke holidays for special groups.
Set in the centre of the Lakes halfway between Grasmere and Ambleside – surely one of the UK’s most lovely walking destinations, we experience the glory of this area and the colours that tease the senses and leave you wanting more.
We stay Sunday to Wednesday at Rydal Hall – magnificent gardens, close to the well know coffin path between the twin centres of Ambleside and Grasmere. Rooms for sole occupancy.
Rydal Hall started its life as a Christian retreat- but as the years have gone by it is adapting as a hotel for all activities, particularly for walking holidays. Secret Hills have created a good working relationship which benefits both parties.
There is a bar and several meeting and lounge rooms to enjoy- and on a warm evening the lovely grounds are a joy to stroll in- with the magnificent Rydal waterfall to gaze over.
Evening dinner is three courses.
Lunch is normally in a lovely country pub, but dependent on walk choices – it may be a picnic lunch.
We offer you the opportunity to stay additional nights, and many people extend their weekend as they wish. Just reserve what nights you need.
There are other walking holiday companies that cover the countryside but we believe we offer the best value for many reasons….
Rydal Hall is situated between Ambleside and Grasmere on the A590 main road. At Rydal, turn left clearly signed to Rydal Mount- the home of Wordsworth.
Sat nav – LA22 9LX
By train – Windermere is the nearest station- you can catch the 555 bus to Keswick or take a taxi from the station.
See National Rail for train times.
Our fabulous hotels position allows us to walk straight from the hotel door and access our trails and to take in fabulous views all day long.
Walking on Sunday afternoon/Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday and Thursday until 3.30pm.
The first afternoon will be 4 miles long. Walks on other days will be between 8 and 10 miles dependent on terrain and weather conditions.
We will take transport to other areas close by such as Coniston and Hawkshead.
Paths on this Lake District holiday are mostly well marked and walked but can be rough and uneven with stony parts in places. These we take carefully, bearing in mind your safety at all times.
You need good walking footwear, preferably waterproof walking boots with good soles for protection.
Whilst we do not climb the high fells- we will ascend up to a height of max 750 metres in any one walk, so there will be some short, sharp ascents and descents.
Walks will be chosen from the many that are available taking in Loughrigg, Wansfell Pike, Grasmere, Easdale and Helm Crag, Langdale Valley and Lingmoor Fell, Rydal Fell, Brathay Valley, Tarn Howes and Hawkshead, Troutbeck, Orrest Head and Windermere.
Its all about meeting new friends. Each holiday is designed to be a friendly, relaxed and stress free occasion. Talking is as important as walking on Secrethills Walking Holidays. We don’t go in for discos, we may use an event that is taking place in the area we are in to boost the weekends activities – but its good, old fashioned chat that makes our short breaks successful.
“Make new friends that turn into old friends” – that’s our motto.
You might be surprised by what fun you’ll have with people who are older or younger than you during a holiday with us, and that’s exactly the sort of atmosphere we encourage; people find it very rewarding. It doesn’t matter what your reasons for traveling with us are, we’ve had people who are single, divorced or widowed, people who have partners that are unable to travel, and people who can’t holiday with their friends anymore as they’ve all got married themselves. There are people who want to make friends, see sights, and experience something completely new. Whatever your reason, we’ll welcome you with open arms and our friendly hosts will help you to get the most out of your holiday.
Don’t worry if this is the first time you have ventured to join a group holiday – its always a bit daunting – but we will look after you and ensure that you get used to being amongst friends again. Trust us to to get you back into the swing of things.
Oh – by the way – its not a dating agency – over the years we have had people meet and fall in love – but that’s just chance. Our aim is that you make like minded friends – just relax and enjoy.
Just arrive and enjoy.

On this holiday we walk in the area bounded by Windermere, Coniston, Ambleside, the Langdales and Grasmere. Wonderful walking in outstanding natural beauty. At 885 square miles the Lake District is England’s largest national park just waiting to be explored.
The Lakes are home to England’s deepest lake Wastwater; longest lake Windermere and highest mountain, Scafell Pike In fact there are only 5 peaks over 900m in England and they are all here in Cumbria. With 50 stone circles, and Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Whether you want to delve into our deep, sometimes dark past or simply enjoy some stunning surroundings, there’s plenty of local history and heritage to keep you interested in the scenic highlights of the Lake District.
Guides were fantastic. Guided walking – loved it. Organisation of holiday – exceptional. Brilliant location.
The walks were excellent we had a great variation and the views were beautiful and the weather very good. Both of the guides were knowledgeable and very helpful and friendly. They were also flexible depending on what our group wished to do which was appreciated. There was a very good variety of walk locations and types on all three days. Holiday was very well organised. The hotel was very comfortable and good location. The food was excellent and the room very comfortable with a lovely bath the shower could be improved it did not flow very well but overall the hotel was great and very comfortable. It was a fabulous weekend thanks to all.
I really enjoyed the Lakes short break in Aug and am very grateful that you were able to fit me in at such short notice. The alternative accommodation you found for me, was lovely, very clean, very obliging and I felt really CV secure. Paul and Jill the walk leaders were excellent, friendly, informative and flexible. I’m sure Paul’s ears are still ringing from the 8 middle-aged women cackling along behind him! Service at the Skelworth Bridge was excellent, and the food very good, staff were really friendly. The walks were well planned, stretching, and provided a great range of scenery. As always, enjoyed myself, thanks Alan and team, regards Jayne
This was my first holiday with Secret Hills, so I didn’t know what to expect by ‘moderate’. I found the pace a little slower than I’m used to, but overall enjoyed the days. Yes, enjoyed guided walking especially Sunday’s walk (to Silver How). The pre-holiday info, and the organisation was very good. Hotel – Very good – friendly staff, wonderful setting for the hotel, plenty of indoor space (so no concerns over covid). I would very probably (reserve another holiday). There are not a lot of companies offering UK guided group walking holidays, which is what I am interested in at the moment.
Dear Alan, I am happy to report that I really enjoyed my recent holiday at the Skelwith Bridge Hotel. The staff couldn’t do enough and were a very cheerful bunch. The food was delicious and the choices of breakfast and dinner were nicely varied.
Paul and Gill were excellent leaders and complement each other as Paul told us lots about the landscape and history of the area and Gillian Introduced us to some new plants. The walks were spectacular, challenging and well timed. The group was lovely and friendly.
Another wonderful holiday!
